One of the things I really love about Rancho Santa Margarita is that the City promotes positive change. I have to admit that when I learned that Skate Central was going to be shut down I was disappointed. The outdoor roller hockey rink was a great idea and it seemed to serve a real purpose when it was originally built. Over time, however, it appears that interest in roller hockey has gone by the wayside, and more often than not the Central Park
rink has been quiet and unoccupied.
Since the rink was was primarily used for team play, and open to the public only on designated days, I’m not surprised that the City has been quick to find an alternate use for the space. In-line skaters still have use of Rancho Santa Margarita’s Skate Park, but roller hockey players will have to find other options. The area has been refurbished and renamed “SAMLARC Arena” and soccer fans are thrilled. Given the number of school-aged kids involved in soccer, the City has probably made a wise decision. Skate Central will be missed, but the space will definitely be put to good use.
AYSO 630 will conduct an Opening Day Exhibition sponsored by SAMLARC on September 16th from 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm. League sign-up information will be available at the event. I hear that arena soccer is very fast-paced and fun to watch. I’m looking forward to checking it out.
