2nd Battalion 5th Marine Regiment Crest
The City of Rancho Santa Margarita adopted the 2nd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment in January of this year. The 2/5, out of Camp Pendleton, is an infantry battalion of more that 1,000 Marines and Sailors. The unit was established in 1917 and holds the honor of being the most decorated infantry battalion in the Marines.

This amazing group is currently serving our country in Iraq. As the war in Iraq drags on and on and criticism of the administration’s decisions and management of the war continue to mount, it is crucial to remember that our service men and women still need our support. I urge you to set aside your personal opinions regarding the politics of war and to take literal action to help the 2/5. Right or wrong, the US is at war and the 2/5 is over in Iraq right now - serving our country and fighting for our freedom.

In support of the 2/5 the City of Rancho Santa Margarita is holding a Care Package Drive. The 2/5 has specifically requested the following items:

• Bar Soap
• Razors
• Shampoo
• Chewing Gum
• Hard Candy
• DVDs
• Air Freshener
• Phone Cards

Donations should be dropped off at City Hall or at Bell Tower Regional Community Center. Care Packages will be assembled on May 21st from 3:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. at the Community Center. The City is looking for volunteers to assist with putting together the packages. This is a great way for intermediate school and high school students to complete their mandatory service hours. It’s also an excellent opportunity for families to work together in serving within their community.

On April 23rd, the City of Rancho Santa Margarita sponsored a Card Making and Postage Campaign at the Bell Tower Regional Community Center. Approximately 70 community members participated. Cards, care packages and banners were made by students from Santa Margarita Catholic High School, Trabuco Hills High School, National Charity League, Boy Scouts of America, Girl Scouts of America, AYSO Region 630, RSM Little League and The City of Rancho Santa Margarita.

If you have questions regarding the Care Package Drive and Rancho Santa Margarita’s support of 2nd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, please contact the 2/5 Adoption Committee at Marines.cityofrsm.org or call City Hall (949) 635-1800.

What a great way for adults and children to work together for such a worthy cause. To see the community doing something for our troops is awesome. I know the Marines really appreciate this special blessing.

What a wonderful and supportive idea. I’ve never heard of a city adopting a specific regiment. This is one idea that I want to bring to my community!

    Ellie: I couldn’t agree more.
Michelle: There are a few cities in our area who have stepped up to the plate to support our troops and it has worked out well. I’d still like to see a little more community involvement but the program is still relatively new and the word is still getting out.

I came across this site while looking for other news about the 2/5 Marines. My son is in Iraq with the 2/5. As Mother’s Day approaches, I have been particularly blue, and seeing your site made me realize there are lots of other “Moms” and “Dads” caring for our 2/5 Marines. I really appreciate what you are doing. My son tells me the packages and cards make such a difference and provide a needed lift. Thanks for remembering these guys-they will remember you.

Ann: I wish you a Happy Mother’s Day. We do care about those Marines over there and will do what we can to show them our support. I’m sure you son will be thinking of you on Sunday. God Bless.
