Cinco de Mayo was an ideal day to celebrate Santa Margarita Water District’s 7th annual Fiesta de Agua. The event brought hundreds of Rancho Santa Margarita residents and members of surrounding communities together to learn more about water conservation, the science of water, and how Santa Margarita Water District is working to optimize our local water system.

The Mad Scientist made two separate appearances and gave the younger crowd the opportunity to interact in several water science projects. Mad Science is a Mission Viejo-based company that runs Summer Science programs for kids aged 5-12 and the Little Scientists Preschool Lab for ages 3-5. Mad Science also contracts for birthday parties.

As with all organized events within the community, the fire department was on-site and ready to be of assistance. Fire hats and junior fire department badges were passed out to kids and adults alike.

Face painting is always a big hit with kids and today’s event was no exception. The face painter and Agua de Fiesta was kept busy with a steady line-up of kids looking to participate.

Putting on an event as large as Fiesta de Agua requires that there be a fairly large number of volunteers. Some of the volunteers were Water District employees, some were the children of employees and some were community students looking to fulfill their mandated service hours. All of the volunteers appeared to be having a great time answering questions, assisting with information, and coordinating arts, crafts, food and entertainment.

Barbecued hot dogs, popcorn, snow cones and drinks were on the house.

At one of the booths kids could make a bracelet. As they strung the beads onto a string, a booth volunteer asks questions and give information on water and water conservation.

One of unique events of Fiesta de Agua is a 45-minute tour of the district facilities. This was the first year that I have taken the tour and I found it to be very informative. Our guide, employed by the district for over fifteen years, explained how water is transfered from resevoirs through pump stations, to water towers and ultimately ends up with the consumer. The tour is 45 minutes but I would recommend that you take the opportunity to do this next year if you haven’t already.

Santa Margarita Water District maintains approximately 125 employees who are responsible for managing our water supply and sewage in additional to maintaining the equipment and computers necessary to manage a district of this size. Most of us don’t give too much thought about how are water gets to our kitchen tap - we just want it to be there. It’s a long and complicated process however, and Santa Margarita Water District has managed to do a quality job of keeping everything in line and flowing smoothly - even throughout the development of Ladera Ranch and Talega.
