The February 6th meeting of the California Coastal Commission regarding the extension of the 241 Toll Road has been moved from its original location at Oceanside City Hall to Wyland Hall at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. An extra 18-20 miles each way for Rancho Santa Margarita residents. Given that the meeting is scheduled to start at 9:00, and that the drive will take a minimum of one hour, in perfect traffic conditions, anyone wishing to attend the meeting should head south no later than 7:30 a.m. For directions to Del Mar Fairgrounds from Rancho Santa Margarita click here.

Supervisor Pat Bate’s website suggests the change in venue is being made in an effort to accommodate a larger crowd than originally anticipated. With an issue this heated it doesn’t surprise me. I expect that the morning of February 6th, South County surfers will show up at Del Mar in droves, leaving Trestles temporarily abandoned and looking like a virtual ghost-town of a beach. Surfers are notoriously flakey (not my judgment) but I suspect in this matter they’ll make an exception and that quite a number of them will show up to stand against TCA’s current proposition.

Supervisor Pat Bates website notes:

“The Transportation Corridor Agency (TCA) needs as many supporters as possible to attend this important Coastal Commission meeting. We need people at the hearing who are willing to stand up and tell the Coastal Commissioners why the 241 completion is so important. Please email jseaton@thetollroads.com if you are interested in attending or if you have any questions. For more information, please click here and here.

I think the change in venue will have an effect on the number of toll road proponents that attend the Coastal Commission Meeting. RSM residents would need to plan on two and a half hour of driving to attend the meeting whereas it will cost San Clemente residents only an hour and a half both ways. My guess is that toll road proponents are less passionate about their need for the toll road extension than their environmentalist counterparts. I think less will show up than initially planned on attending and I think the surfer-environmentalists will dominate this meeting. I guess we’ll see on the 6th.

For those who plan to attend, here is the Revised Staff Report and Recommendation on Consistency Certification.

I welcome comments and opinions from diverse viewpoints on this blog but I respectfully ask that commentors refrain from making generally offensive statements or comments meant to criticize an individual’s race, ethnic background, sex, marital status, religion, etc. I seem to get a lot of inappropriate comments when I post about the toll road and these types of comments will be removed. So please don’t bother to leave them in the first place.
