Officials need to understand that designated parkland is not simply being held in reserve for future development. The route through San Onofre is short-sighted at best. A tollroad across San Onofre will only encourage more development, with a corresponding increase in traffic. It happened with the 91 freeway, which used to be two lanes in each direction. As soon as it was “improved,” developers bought up the cheap land on either side and built thousands of houses, putting more cars on the 91 and necessitating more “improvement.” People STILL sit mired in traffic on the 91 even with the tollroad and 5 or 6 other lanes. I applaud the Coastal Commission for voting to preserve parkland, and the Army Corps of Engineers, which has complained to the Dept. of Commerce about falsifications of the Corps’ position in the TCA’s appeal of the Commision’s ruling.
