Good Tuesday for Foothill 241 Toll Road Proponents

Last November, Jubal at Red County’s OC Blog wrote about Senator Tom Harmon’s reconsidered political position regarding the proposed completion of the Foothill 241 Toll Road.

“Kudos to Sen. Harman for joining the side of the angels on this issue. Needless to say, gaining the support of someone with Harman’s strong green credentials is a coup for toll road proponents and a PR defeat for 241 opponents. Hopefully, Sen. Harman can impress upon the Governor there is no contradiction between supporting the 241’s completion and being a good steward of the environment.”

Well, apparently the Senator was able to bend the Governor’s ear. Brian Joseph of the Orange County Register reported that Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger “urged the California Coastal Commission to approve the Foothill (241) Toll Road extension” today. Read Governor backs 241 toll road extension. A copy of the letter written by Gov. Schwarzenegger to the California Coastal Commission can be found at Red County.

Secondly, Assembly Bill 1457 was defeated today by the Assembly Committee on Water, Parks and Wildlife, removing yet another obstacle, which could have been a significant “road block” in the push for toll road completion. Passage of AB 1457 would have empowered the State Parks Commission to veto any roads on any State Park land, and would have allowed the Commission to veto the current proposed route and plan for the 241. Failure of this bill to pass is a huge boon to toll road proponents and the TCA.

On February 6, 2008 at 9:00 am, the Coastal Commission will convene at Oceanside City Hall. Click here for a map. This is the time to make your voice heard. I urge Rancho Santa Margarita residents who feel strongly either for or against the completion of the 241 Toll Road, to make it a point to be at that meeting.
