Sound familiar? It always amazes me when I hear these words come out of my kids’ mouths. They have no idea how good they’ve got it.
I grew up in South Orange County and admittedly things were much different then than they are now. We didn’t have XBOX 360, Nintendo Wii or PS3s and our television sets got three stations if the rabbit ears were adjusted just right. There weren’t DVD, CD, or MP3 players; nor were there personal computers, cordless or cell phones. Heck, I didn’t even have a Easy-Bake Oven…but Christie Markland up the street did…and our whole street shared hers.

Most of the time we played outside. We rode bikes and scooters, and played games like kick-the-can, red rover, hopscotch and ding-dong ditch. We explored the nooks and crannies of the unspoiled rolling hills that are now the residential community of Marina Hills. We caught snakes and lizards, made mud pies and had somersault and cartwheel contests. Kid’s were outside playing the majority of the day allowing Mom some space to do the Susie Homemaker thing. We did spend a lot of time at the beach though.

Society is different today and in most suburban communities parents must keep a much closer eye on their kids. Even living in Rancho Santa Margarita, which is notably safer than many communities of its size, there is no guaranteed safety for children. Many parents opt to team up with other parents in the neighborhood creating a non-official kind of neighborhood watch for kids. Others choose to organize play groups and play dates for their kids.
Organized youth sports is huge in Rancho Santa Margarita and the majority of children play at least one sport. Active involvement in teams sports leaves little time for boredom. For more information on league rules and sign-ups click on the name below:
AYSO Region 630
RSM Soccer Club
Rancho Santa Margarita Little League
Pop Warner Football & Cheer
Rancho Trabuco Girl’s Softball
There are also several options for group and private instruction:
California School of Martial Arts
Aikido
World Elite Gymnastics
California Elite (Cheer, dance, gymnastics, tumbling & swimming)
My Gym (Children’s Fitness Center)
Within the immediate community of Rancho Santa Margarita there are plenty of things for RSM kids to do. There are numerous parks, community pools, tennis and volleyball courts, a skate park, a roller hockey rink, and a movie theater. There is also the Beach Club, where kids can splash around in the lagoon, build a sandcastle, try their hand at fishing or peddle around in a rented paddle boat.

Outside Rancho Santa Margarita boundaries are even more adventures for kids:
Orange County Beaches
Wild Rivers Water Park
Bowers Museum
Disneyland
Boomer’s
Irvine Spectrum
Discovery Science Center
Knott’s Berry Farm
Orange County Zoo
Balboa Fun Zone
Orange Marine Institute/The Ocean Institute
So the next time you hear the words, “Mom, I’m bored! There’s nothing to do!” - you’ll be armed with a list to please even the most finicky of kids. If you work it right, you may even get a chore or two out of them.
