Politics, Politics, Politics. I would venture to say that for the majority of Rancho Santa Margarita residents politics plays a rather background role. It’s a complicated and often frustrating subject that takes a considerable amount of time and effort for one to fully understand. I find myself more and more tempted to leave politics to the politicians. Tempted. But I’m not quite ready to abandon it completely.

Now Orange County citizens have yet another way to keep up with politics - this time at the county level. The County of Orange announced in a recent press release that affective May 22nd, 2006 all Orange County Board of Supervisors meetings will be available via live streaming video on the Internet. In addition, a couple of hours following each meeting, a full agenda along with links to relevant archives will be provided. These video streams will include closed captioning for the hearing impaired and a search feature for users to locate and review other pertinent meetings.

GovTv, the broadcast producer, is a Los Angeles-based company that has been working with the County of Orange and the County of Los Angeles for several years. The big news here is not that the Board meetings will be recorded, but that Orange County citizens will have immediate access to the what their elected officials are doing. For a calendar of scheduled Board meetings click here. To access live streaming video of the Board meetings click here.

I’m glad to see that Orange County is keeping up with the times and making these meetings available to the public. I can’t say that I’ll be a regular watcher, but it’s nice to know that We The People have the choice.

Kelly, that’s pretty amazing! Our little Miami Shores village is nowhere close to that technology. Should be a great tool for residents.

Ines: I think the best part about is that it will allow Orange County citizens to track specific issues and how their elected officials are performing in moving forward with political agendas. I think it’s probably the wave of the future. I wouldn’t be surprised if Miami-Dade moved toward this in the next year or so. They already have pretty good info on demand at http://www.miamidade.gov/ondemand

I absolutely agree, tracking issues by elected officials is a great tool. I cannot complain about dade-county’s services, although they are not updated as they should but the advantage would be at the more localized cities within the county….but I know that’s way too much to ask.
