With all the concerns of global warming and the renewed interest and focus on trying to clean up and protect the environment, I was surprised to learn that the City of Rancho Santa Margarita had no formal plans to participate in Earth Day.

Many other South Orange County cities have orchestrated their own events or have partnered with other environmentally conscious groups and have encouraged their citizens to get involved. Here’s a look at what some other cities are doing:

Mission Viejo will be hosting its first Artes de la Vida, or “The Art of Life” program in which the city combines celebrations for Earth Day, Arbor Day, and Volunteer Connection Day. Click here for more information.
San Juan Capistrano will host its 6th Annual Earth Day Fair.
• Laguna Niguel holds Volunteer Connection Day on April 21st. Participants work to clean up and beautify Niguel Botanical Preserve.
Laguna Beach EARTH DAY cleanup effort and environmental fair on April 21st. Concert @ Club M on April 22nd from 7pm - 11pm. The After party will be free to those who participate in both the cleanup effort and environmental fair on Saturday April 21st.
Dana Point encourages participation at the Native Tree Planting Project, sponsored by Starbucks Make Your Mark Program, at Doheny State Beach. There is also a neighborhood cleanup project targeting Lantern Village and Harbor areas that has been organized by Dana Point Earth/Ocean Society. Both events are on April 22nd. Click here for more information.
San Clemente celebrates Earth Day on April 21st at Parque del Mar (near the Pier). The event is a joint effort between the City of San Clemente and the Watershed Task Force and there is live entertainment, demonstrations and activities for kids. For more details click here.

In addition to the city-sponsored events there are beach cleanup programs on both Saturday April 21st and April 22nd at most coastal beach locations.

Rancho Santa Margarita residents who wish to participate in Earth Day are on their own this year but there are plenty of organized activities elsewhere. I’d keep an eye out for the City of Rancho Santa Margarita next year though. Sooner or later the City government is going to have to start hugging trees and promoting green living. Right now they’re behind the eight ball and it’s not looking good. If you’d really like to help Rancho Santa Margarita for Earth Day, my recommendation is to send an email to City Hall requesting that the City of RSM orchestrate an Earth Day event for 2008. Now that would be great!
